Welcome to Year 5
Miss Steel's Class

2020-2021

We were inspired by the work of Magdalene Odundo, who is a Kenyan born glass and ceramic artist.

We looked at how she used her sketchbook to daw out her ideas before making them in 3D and created our own collaborative artwork outside.

The children adapted a recipe for Spaghetti Bolognese to use healthier ingredients before making and taste-testing 4 options.

The children enjoyed tinkering about with the BBC microbit and programming animations.

As part of our science topic the children have been investigating different mixtures and using different techniques to separate out each material from the mixture.

We have really enjoyed painting a ceramic decoration for Christmas.

In the playleaders sessions the children have been learning how to design and lead playground games using a variety of skills including, running, jumping, throwing and catching.

Welcome to Year 6
Mr Lucey's Class

2020-2021

The children were challenged to design and construct automata toys inspired by Halloween.

We learnt lots of new skills and applied them to the complex construction of our working toys.

Our design technology focus this half term was food tech. The children were challenged with designing a three-course meal.

They came up with Mini-Pepper boats stuffed with cream cheese, Salmon Teriyaki on a bed of green beans and berry cheesecake.

We had a brilliant time trying some new foods.

In Literacy this term we have spent time study Macbeth by William Shakespeare. The children loved learning about the tragic Macbeth and malevolent Lady Macbeth. We spent a great deal of time studying the text and discussing how the characters changed during the course of the play.

For our expressive art topic we have been studying works of art inspired by protests.

The children created wildstyle graffiti tags, mood art inspired by Kathe Kollwitz, our own interpretation of Picasso’s ‘Guernica’ and clay sculptures.

At Derwent Vale Primary and Nursery School we use the Maths – No Problem approach.

This term in Year 6 we have been learning about a variety of things such as: fractions, decimals, prime numbers, multiplication and division and a whole lot more.

Here are a few snapshots of some of the things we have been studying.

Year 5 and 6 have been reading the book ‘Fox’ by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks.

The children have been mapping out the story of the friendship of Magpie, Dog and Fox.
