Our Year 6 children are taking part in Cumbria's Spellbinding Reading Challenge!

Now in its 10th year, Spellbinding is Cumbria's annual book award aimed which runs during the Spring term.

The award aims to create enthusiasm and excitement about books, encourage reading for pleasure and widen pupils reading choices.

There is a short list of 10 titles from a range of brilliant authors that we know our pupils at Derwent Vale will love, but may not have come across before:

  1. The Great Chocoplot by Chris Callahan

  2. Beetle Boy by M.G. Leonard

  3. The Accidental Secret Agent by Tom McLaughlin

  4. Julius Zebra. Rumble with the Romans by Gary Northfield

  5. The Astounding Broccoli Boy by Frank Cottrell Boyce

  6. Electrigirl by Jo Cotterill

  7. Through the Mirror Door by Sarah Baker

  8. The Wilderness War by Julia Green

  9. The Halloweeds by Veronica Cossateli

  10. Uncle Gobb by Michael Rosen

Our Year 6 pupils will read as many books from the shortlist as possible and then vote for their favourite.

The winning book is announced after the Easter holidays.

Each child receives a passport with a sticker to collect every time they have read a book.

There is also a website where our pupils can post reviews, engage in online discussions and download quizzes.
