In Derwent Vale Nursery and Primary School, as well as encouraging our children to read to an adult five times a week at home, they are also given opportunities to read aloud with a peer in their own class and to a partner in another class who is older than them.
We have been very impressed at how seriously the older children take on their tutoring role, and it has also been great to see how much our younger children have gained in confidence when reading aloud.
Tia, in Year 4, says:
"I like listening to the little ones read and helping them to sound and blend and seeing them move further on in their reading stages."
Emmie, in Year 1, sums it up:
"I like paired reading with the big boys and girls because it is different to reading to grown-ups. I read more for myself."
