This section is devoted to information on the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check, and the following on how to support your child with their reading at home.
The information is useful for all parents to know.
Children in year 1 will take a ‘Phonics Screening Check’ in the summer term to ascertain children’s attainment in reading phonetically by the end of year 1. The check consists of 40 words, 20 of them are known words (of which 40-60% are words that are likely to be outside a 6 year old’s vocabulary) and 20 ‘nonsense’ words that need to be sounded out by the child.
A sample of what the check will look like is shown here.
At Derwent Vale Primary School we believe that teaching children to read and write independently, as quickly as possible, is vital to a child's education. These fundamental skills have a huge impact on a child's self-esteem and are key components to your child's education. We use the successful Read, Write, Inc. (RWI) programme to teach the children in EYFS and KS1 to read.
The programme uses synthetic phonics to teach reading and it covers all of the National Curriculum requirements for literacy and language. All Read Write Inc. lessons are delivered by reading teachers who have received Read Write Inc. training. All reading teachers also have access to an online portal to continue their professional development.
Children in our school begin the Read Write Inc. programme when they are in nursery. They start by learning the first 30 sounds in short, daily sessions. In reception children will start to read story books that are matched to their phonetic knowledge. The children then continue to move on through the programme and start to write and spell words with sounds they already know. As the children move through the programme they learn new sounds as well as recapping over old sounds. The children are assessed every half term. They are then put into groups according to the level they are working at. These assessments are carried out frequently to ensure teaching is fast paced and precisely what the children need. We provide short 10 minute sessions for children who may be struggling in their daily phonics lessons. Often children only need a few weeks of this 1:1 until they are back on track.
Once the children have completed the Read Write Inc. programme they will move on to Curriculum with Unity Schools Partnership (CUSP) which is a complete literacy programme for children in years 2-6 and is linked to the national curriculum.
